Ramgarhia Sabha Sikh Temple Wolverhampton
Guru Nanak Dev Ji
God always gives great blessings to humble beginnings then those that start with big fanfare.
The Ramgarhia Sabha Sikh Temple was established in 1974. Mr Piara Singh Jandu, Mr Pritam Singh Juss, Mr Jagjit Singh Bahra and Mr Kewal Singh Bansal were elected to serve as President, Vice president, General secretary and Treasurer respectively. Later that same year the members of the Ramgarhia Sabha purchased the property at 344 Newhampton Road East which is provided the initial site which is still in use today. Mr Piara Singh Jandu, Mr Pritam Singh Juss, Mr Jagjit Singh Bahra, Mr Kewal Singh Bansal became the first trustees of the Gurdwara.
Although the building was purchased in 1974, the Gurdwara was not officially opened until 1975 during the celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birthday. At the same time the Ramgarhia Sabha started looking for members of the Sikh community to become members/life members.
From 1975 to 1986 the above committee ran the Gurdwara. In 1986 the Gurdwara purchased the adjoining building No 343 Newhampton Road East. This was primarily to comply with new council regulations. The two buildings were combined internally. As this is a conservation area, the outside of the buildings could not be changed.
In subsequent years the Gurdwara continued to purchase additional adjoining properties; 342 in 1990, 341 in 1992 and 340 in 2002.
In 2003 Mr Piara Singh Jandu sadly passed away, whilst holding the position as President of the Gurdwara at the time. A new committee was unanimously elected:
Mr Jagjit Singh Bahra – President, Mr Harbajan Singh Behlla – Vice President
Mr Ranjit Singh Jandu – General Secretary, Mr Harbinder Singh Bansal - Treasurer
Under the leadership of Mr Jagjit Singh Bahra, the committee engaged architects to draw up plans for the reconstruction of the Ramgarhia Sabha, this was to include all 5 buildings numbers 340 to 344.
Following numerous objections from the Wolverhampton Council and lot of hard work by Mr Jagjit Singh Bahra, Mr Harbajan Singh Behlla, Mr Manjit Singh Chodda, Mr Ajit Singh Matharu and Mr Maninderpal Singh Jandu, permission was finally obtained for the building work to commence.
The reconstruction of the current Ramgarhia Sabha Sikh Temple started in late 2009.
There is a car park with 26 spaces at the rear of the Gurdwara. Entrance to the car park is on Newhampton Road East with a one-way system is now in operation (please note: match day restrictions apply). For additional parking during larger functions, the nearby Molineux car park is available to hire. Please enquire with a member of the Committee, should you require additional parking.
